Theme – Our Bones and Skeletons unit is almost complete. The children are finishing off assignment work at the moment, including a written report and observational drawings.
Literacy – The children have been reading novels with the aim of completing a literature study on their chosen text. They are also expected to practise a passage of their novel to read aloud to the class. They have all finished their plays with a particularly humorous one being performed in assembly last Friday. They have also been reading SRA cards (reading comprehension programme) and completing the associated activities.
Mathematics – The class is involved in a study of perimeter, area and volume, an aspect of the Measurement Strand. They have daily basic facts practise and a daily maintenance programme which reviews work covered earlier in the year.
Art – We have been using charcoal to learn more about drawing. We have focussed on the lights and darks in a monotone picture of a human skull using smudging and other shading techniques to create a 3D image.
P.E / Health – We are continuing with winter sports skills, with Mr Poelman taking one session per week.
Music – Room 1 is now having a recorder lesson with me each week during Room1/2 interchange on Tuesday afternoons. The school choir (42 pupils) has begun practising for the Kainui Concert which will be held in August. We will be singing two songs, one in two part harmony and the other accompanied by the school band. The band has two drummers, one bass guitarist, one rhythm guitarist and eight acoustic guitarists. We hope to add four trumpets and some keyboards. We had our first practice with the choir today and it went very well.
