The corner of the two roads outside our school was the drop off point for the district’s rubbish bags. Monday morning was the pick up day. So each Monday there appeared a great pile of bags outside the school. Sometimes the bags burst, sometimes stray animals ripped them open and sometimes the wind would spread their contents far and wide. It made the school look untidy. Our principal lobbied the Manawatu District Council to come up with a solution. The Council promptly provided a rubbish cage which was located around the corner and away from the school gate. This worked reasonably well until some locals started to leave their bags beside the cage with a predictable result.
To be fair it was quite difficult for people to throw their heavy bags into the cage once the lower door was covered by bags however we were now faced with a regular and very unpleasant clean up.
We approached the council again and the following day two workers were working on the problem by building a special rubbish enclosure. Well done Manawatu District Council!
Mount Biggs locals can still help in the following ways:
- Don’t leave your bags outside the rubbish enclosure.
- Restrict your drop off of bags to Monday mornings.
- Keep your dogs under control.
- Reuse, compost and recycle so that there is not so much rubbish.
